Striking Parallels

While I worked at the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld as a paralegal, the partner in charge of the firm's Legal Assistant Program was an individual named Earl L. Segal, Esq.

Mr. Segal was born on June 7, 1947. My brother-in-law was born on June 4, 1947.

Both parties were from Philadelphia.

Both parties were Jewish.

Mr. Segal was a real estate attorney. My brother-in-law was in the real estate business and he owned a second mortgage business.

Mr. Segal earned his undergraduate degree from Penn State in May 1969. I earned my undergraduate degree from Penn State in May 1975.

I view Earl Segal as a successful version of myself.

Noted Washington, D.C. Attorney Earl L. Segal Changes Career and Joins Newmark Knight Frank
Washington, DC (01/11/2006)
In what Newmark Knight Frank officials here say is a major coup, Earl L. Segal, one of the most prominent and well-respected real estate attorneys in the nation’s capital with more than 30 years experience in real estate law, has decided to change careers and join Newmark Knight Frank’s operations in Washington, D.C.

Segal, who was recently named one of the leading real estate attorneys in Washington, D.C. by Legal Times, has practiced real estate law in the region for more than 30 years, the last 20 years as a partner in the law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP.

Newmark Knight Frank officials note that Segal has worked on many major and oftentimes complex real estate transactions in the Washington, D.C. area and around the country. They added that Segal could have chosen any commercial brokerage firm in the Washington, D.C. area and are delighted the 58-year old attorney chose to launch his new career at Newmark Knight Frank.

“Given Earl’s innate talents and 30-plus years of real estate experience, he will add significant value to the strategic thought process and transactional implementation on behalf of Newmark Knight Frank’s existing and prospective clients,” said Newmark Knight Frank Managing Principal, Law Firm Advisory Services, Aaron Katz.

Patrick W. Nalls, managing principal of Newmark Knight Frank’s Washington, D.C. office, added, “Earl will work with all of Newmark Knight Frank’s specialty practices including Law Firm Advisory Services, Corporate Services, Not-for-Profit Advisory Services, as well as Investment Sales, and Newmark Knight Frank also hopes to build other global specialties around Earl’s vast knowledge, as in the hospitality area, for example.”

Explaining his decision to change careers and join Newmark Knight Frank, Segal said that his family background is in real estate brokerage and development. In fact, prior to attending law school at the University of Pittsburgh, Segal was a project manager for a developer of multifamily housing projects.

“This is an opportunity to join the business side of a vibrant and growing company where I have the chance to apply the skills, successes and relationships of the past 30-plus years,” Segal said.

Segal, who is expected to join Newmark Knight Frank the week of Jan. 9, termed his new firm as “a growing, aggressive and smart company.” He noted the move to Newmark Knight Frank “gives me a chance to work with and collaborate with a group of fellows that I have worked with over 20 years.”

Segal’s practice at the Akin Gump firm related to matters in commercial, retail and hotel acquisition and sales, commercial and retail leasing, real estate lending, and commercial, hotel, retail and residential development and ancillary finance.

In addition to being named one of the leading real estate attorneys in the Washington, D.C. area by Legal Times, Segal has been recognized as a leading real estate lawyer in the nation’s capital in numerous editions of The Best Lawyers in America, including its 2006 edition.

Segal has been active with such organizations as: The Urban Land Institute, the National Association of Home Builders, the International Council of Shopping Centers and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Greater Washington Board of Trade. Segal also serves as general counsel to that organization.

Among his many achievements, Segal is also a frequent contributor to a number of real estate and legal publications, including The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel, The Practical Real Estate Lawyer, The Journal of Real Estate Finance, International Association of Attorneys and Executives in Real Estate and The National Law Journal to name just a few,

In 2001 the Burton Foundation awarded Segal the Burton Award for Legal Achievement and he is a recipient of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs Outstanding Service Award.
