Yesterday, I attended a performance of Wagner's opera Gotterdammerung. I've loved the opera since I was 12 years old. My mother bought me a recording of the opera when I turned 13, in December 1966.
The Washington National Opera General Director, Placido Domingo, writes in Playbill that "Gotterdammerung delves into the depths of the human psyche, using Norse mythology to give light into our inner workings. It deals with envy, hatred, treachery, and the abuse of power . . . " I might add that the opera also deals with the subject of perjury [Meineid] -- false sworn statements.
I love the scene in the second act when Siegfried says: "I never had sex with that woman!" Priceless.
Strange that I should have fallen in love with that opera when I was 12 years old.
By the way, I didn't see Ruth and Marty at the Opera -- or Sonia, for that matter.
