Jerry M. Wiener, MD -- An Irony, To Say The Least

The late Jerry M. Wiener, MD was the Chairman of the Psychiatry Department of the George Washington University Medical Center while I was an outpatient there from September 1992 to June 1996.

Dr. Wiener's son, Ross E. Wiener, Esq., used to be a trial attorney in the civil rights division of the Justice Department.

That's ironic, to say the least!

WEDDINGS;

Melike Oncu, Ross Wiener

Published: June 18, 2000

Melike Suna Oncu, the daughter of Tuba and Irfan Oncu of Gulph Mills, Pa., was married last evening to Ross Emanuel Wiener, a son of Louise Weingarten Wiener and Dr. Jerry M. Wiener of Chevy Chase, Md. Judge Kermit V. Lipez of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, for whom the bridegroom was a law clerk, officiated at the Migis Lodge on Sebago Lake in South Casco, Me.

The bride, a graduate of Lafayette College, and the bridegroom, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, received law degrees from George Washington University, where they met.

Both now work in Washington, where the bride, 29, is a corporate law associate at Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman, a law firm, and the bridegroom, 30, is a trial attorney in the civil rights division of the Justice Department.

The bride's father is an assistant vice president for engineering with Amtrak in Philadelphia, where her mother, now retired, was an office manager at the Alternative Medicine Network, a former holistic health center.

The bridegroom's mother (Louise Wiener) is the founder and president of Learning and Leadership in Families, a nonprofit organization for museum and early childhood education. His father is an emeritus professor in residence of psychiatry and of pediatrics at the George Washington University Medical Center and the chairman of the American Psychiatric Press. Dr. Wiener is also a former president of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

A version of this article appeared in print on June 18, 2000, on page 910 of the New York edition.

I wonder if Louise Weingarten Wiener is related to Eric Holder's close friend, Reid Weingarten. Now that would be super ironic!

Louise W. Wiener, President and Founder of Learning and Leadership in Families, is a pioneer in the field of parent involvement in early childhood education. Building on an undergraduate degree in art history (Bryn Mawr College) and a masters degree in education policy (George Washington University) Ms. Wiener designed the learning model first tested under the auspices of the National Head Start Association (1993-5) which is the underpinning for LLF programs. Her national survey of 950 Head Start professionals and 1500 museum educators across the country set the foundation for exploring new partnerships between Head Start adults- parents, teachers, and staff- and community cultural resources. The study was published in the inaugural issue of the National Head Start Association Research Journal in 1997. Her work has been integrated into publications of the US Department of Education and the Council for the Early Childhood Professional Recognition.

Previous senior management experience includes four years as a Special Assistant to the US Secretary of Commerce (1977-81), five years as president and founder of a database publishing firm purchased by Rand-McNally in 1986, and director of Special Projects for The National Learning Center in Washington, DC. 1987 – 1991.

Ms. Wiener was honored by National Council of Jewish Women for her work in juvenile justice and is active in civic and non-profit affairs in Washington, DC.

2008 bio of Dr. Wiener's son, Ross Wiener:

Ross Wiener is Vice President for Program & Policy at the Education Trust, a national, non-profit organization focused on closing achievement gaps in public education. Prior to joining The Education Trust, Ross served as a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. As an attorney in the Educational Opportunities Section, Ross investigated and prosecuted violations of federal civil rights laws in schools and school districts across the country, including cases involving desegregation, disability rights, harassment, and the adequacy of services to limited-English proficient students. Ross received a B.A. with Honors in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a law degree with High Honors from the George Washington University Law School, and clerked for Judge Kermit Victor Lipez of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
