RE: D.C. Medical Board - Disciplinary Complaint no. 98-839

Dear Dr. Taub:

Enclosed is a revised version of the statement that I have requested that you sign as a condition to my taking anti-psychotic medication, and which is the subject matter of the above-referenced disciplinary complaint issued by the District of Columbia Board of Medicine.

The revisions address your concern, that you stated to me at our consultation on March 4, 1999, that you cannot attest to facts about which you have no personal knowledge. The statement in its revised form calls upon you to affirm only that the listed issues are not material to your medical recommendation and that the stated beliefs are not bizarre.

I plan to advise the American Psychiatric Association of the pendency of the complaint. The APA has its own disciplinary procedures for handling complaints of unethical conduct; a finding of unethical conduct can result in penalties ranging from admonishment to expulsion. Keep in mind that this is a potentially high-profile matter, and therefore any action taken by the APA may ultimately receive media attention.

You may contact the APA's District Branch Office, located at the APA's national headquarters:

1400 K Street, NW, Washington, DC; telephone no. (202) 682-6030.

Sincerely,

Gary Freedman
