On December 7, 1941 air and naval forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, an attack that had devastating consequences. The following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the Congress. War with Japan ensued.
In August 1945, the United States ended hostilities decisively with the introduction into warfare of atomic weapons, an event that could not have been foreseen by Japan at the commencement of hostilities four years earlier.
