I used to be a big fan of the TV show The Guardian. The Guardian was an American drama series which aired on CBS from September 25, 2001 to May 4, 2004. The series revolved around protagonist Nick Fallin, a corporate attorney sentenced to 1500 hours community service with Legal Services of Pittsburgh as the result of a drug conviction. The plot focused on Nick's community service and recovery from drug addiction, as well as his strained relationship with his father who was president of the corporate law firm where Nick was employed full time.
The lead character was played by Simon Baker. The lead character's father was played by Dabney Coleman. I used to watch the show faithfully every week. I loved the relationship between Nick and his father. It reminded me of the relationship between Neil Sagot and his father, Leonard -- both lawyers. I worked for Neil Sagot from 1981-1982. The show also reminded me of Glenn Fine and his father. Glenn Fine is the Inspector General of the United States. His father worked as a Justice Department lawyer, too.
Simon Baker is a very good-looking guy. I thought at the time: "What if this is a gay thing? What if I like this show because I am attracted to Simon Baker? Maybe I'm in love with Simon Baker. Maybe I'm really gay!"
Last fall, in 2008, a new show premiered on CBS called The Mentalist. The Mentalist follows Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) based in Sacramento, California. He has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his amazing skills of observation.
When the show was being promoted during the summer of 2008 I thought, "Uh oh, another show starring Simon Baker. I wonder if I'll become addicted to The Mentalist as I was to The Guardian.
So I watched the first episode of The Mentalist in September 2008. Turns out I hated the show. I thought it was too gimmicky. I never watched the show again.
Turns out I'm not in love with Simon Baker, I guess. I may still be a homosexual. But I'm not in love with Simon Baker.
