email Communication: Dean Claudio Grossman--American University Law School

Dear Dean Grossman:

I am sorry that I will be unable to make a gift to the law school. At about 11:45 am on the morning of October 29, 1991 I came down with a debilitating mental illness: asymptomatic paranoid schizophrenia. I have been unable to work ever since the onset of my illness. The illness has proven to be very difficult to treat, as you might well imagine, since it has no symptoms.

Best wishes,

Gary Freedman

Subject: Greetings from Washington College of Law

April 25, 2011

Dear Gary,

April 30th is an important date for the entire Washington College of Law community. Classes will have officially concluded and the library will be flooded with students feverishly preparing for their exams. First year and second year students will have finalized their summer employment plans and the Class of 2011 will be three weeks away from graduation. In addition to heralding an exciting time of transition, April 30th also marks the conclusion of fiscal year 2011.

I sincerely hope that you will consider making a gift to the Washington College of Law within the next few weeks. Throughout my tenure as Dean, I have asked many of our alumni and friends why they choose to give back. The answers I have received have been diverse, thoughtful, and genuine and they serve as a reflection of the values of the WCL community. You can show your support by donating to a fund, student group, publication, program, or scholarship that helped shape who you were as student and your career path. The size of your gift does not matter. It is the gift itself that counts.

With profound gratitude,

Claudio Grossman

Dean
