Aaron Berkowitz received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University and his Ph.D. in Music from Harvard University, where he received a Presidential Fellowship, a Mind/Brain/Behavior Research Award, and the Oscar S. Schafer Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is the author of
The Improvising Mind: Cognition and Creativity in the Musical Moment, recently released by Oxford University Press. His research has been published in NeuroImage and Twentieth Century Music, and the journal NeuroImage awarded him and co-author Daniel Ansari the 2008 Editors Choice Award in Systems Neuroscience for their work on the neural basis of improvisation. He has been an invited speaker at several major U.S. universities and conferences, and he has served as a guest professor in music and psychology at Tufts University. He has performed throughout Europe and the U.S. as a pianist and fortepianist, and his compositions have been performed in Europe and the U.S., including at Carnegie Hall.
He is currently training in neurology at Harvard in the Partners Neurology Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
