Homage to Sidney Rothstein

With concerts, rave reviews, and tributes in March and April 2006, Sidney Rothstein brought to a close his thirty-year career as music director of the Reading Symphony Orchestra in Pennsylvania. In a tribute, the orchestra noted, “No one has done more to shape the fabric of this orchestra or indeed, music in Berks County through the past three decades.”

He will serve as artistic advisor to the Reading Symphony as it transitions to a new music director in 2007 2008. Rothstein also stepped down at the end of last season as music director of the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra (Connecticut), a post he held for ten years. Known for his expertise in audience development and programming for orchestras, the Pennsylvania native began his career as music director of the Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, conducting Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, broadcast on National Public radio during Philadelphia’s bicentennial celebration. Rothstein has also served as music director of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Florida Symphony Orchestra, and as associate conductor of the Honolulu Symphony. He taught conducting at the New School of Music in Philadelphia, then under the director of Max Aronoff.

I attended The Central High School of Philadelphia in the late 1960s. Sidney Rothstein was the instrumental teacher at Central, where I "played" the violin in the school orchestra. I was privileged to rehearse and perform under Sidney Rothstein several notable works including the Brahms Tragic Overture (I still remember Maestro Rothstein saying to the brass, "Taa taa taa taa ta ta taa"), the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Fifth Symphony, the second act duet and third act trio from Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, Beethoven's Egmont Overture and Bernstein's Candide Overture. We rehearsed -- but never performed -- the Good Friday music from Wagner's Parsifal, which was a disappointment for me. Playing in high school orchestra under Maestro Rothstein was an experience that has greatly enriched my life-long appreciation of listening to concert music, live and in recordings.

Tomorrow I will attend a concert performance of Wagner's Gotterdammerung!

Incidentally, Sidney Rothstein was a prize-winning conducting student who honed his craft under famed conductor Pierre Monteux. During the 1960s he was offered the position of music director of the Dallas Symphony. Coincidentally, the father of my mentor, Bob Strauss -- founder of the Dallas-based law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld -- Charles Strauss, was an aspiring concert pianist.

One of the violinists in the Central High School Orchestra, David Rosenbaum, Ph.D. (CHS 229), is now a Professor of Psychology at Penn State, my alma mater.

Curtain closes on Sidney Rothstein's lawsuit against Connecticut orchestra

Sidney Rothstein, former music director and now conductor laureate of the Reading Symphony Orchestra, is finally able to close the curtain on his lawsuit against the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut, of which he was formerly music director.

Rothstein, who resides in Reading, took the unusual step of suing the Ridgefield orchestra after he was terminated on July 21, 2006, following a mild stroke, which resulted in damage to his right arm. (He has since recovered most of his range of motion.)

On April 18, 2007, Rothstein filed a lawsuit against the Ridgefield orchestra, asking $150,000 in damages and claiming disability-based discrimination under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Civil Rights Act of 1991, and discrimination under the Connecticut Human Rights and Opportunities Act, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

At the time of his termination, Rothstein was in the second year of his three-year contract as music director and conductor of the Ridgefield orchestra, a post he had held since 1996.

In July, on the advice of the attorneys involved in the case, the matter was settled out of court to the satisfaction of all parties. Rothstein and the representative of the orchestra have agreed to keep the terms confidential.

According to one of Rothstein's four attorneys, Laura E. Cooper, who practices in Reading and specializes in entertainment law, resolving cases by alternative means such as arbitration or mediation rather than by traditional litigation is often advised to help the parties address particular issues involved in a way that the court is not equipped to do.

Donna Case, the current president of the board and spokesperson for the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

However, a letter from the Ridgefield orchestra, signed by former board president Sabina Slavin, included this sentence: "Maestro Rothstein built the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra to an extremely high level and we are grateful to have had the benefit of his musical expertise."

Rothstein said he is currently exploring possibilities for the future. He continues to lecture throughout the area, and will be conducting a benefit concert for the Children's Learning Center at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on June 6.

Of the lawsuit and subsequent resolution, Rothstein said, "I've spent my life building orchestras, so I found it very painful to bring litigation against an orchestra."

Message from Matt Burke on Facebook:

BurkeThat must have been an amazing experience!

Thank you for your lovely article about Sidney Rothstein. It's always heartwarming to hear of the far and wide influences that great musicians (especially conductors) have on others. I think music is one of the very few arts where this happens so inevitably.

By the way, Matt Burke is a professional musician. His instrument is the trumpet. He teaches and performs.

I was a member of the chorus when Maestro Rothstein conducted the Mahler's 8th in Philadelphia. It was a monumental task. The chorus was positioned on two levels of the Philadelphia Armory. The late Howard Haines, of Drexel University, relayed Maestro's baton movements to us. Dr. Haines watched Sidney on a TV monitor. How the two coordinated the lags an example of 2 marvelous conductors working together.
